At the "Thank you" site: http://www.nssk.no/PRA/thanks.html everyone can see the updated amount of the PRA-account. This site also shows the project's initiatives, donations and collections, which have been enormous. At the moment we cooperat with the Finnish Breeding comettee. We try to get blood samples from the latest PRA-case and familiy and also more blood tests from other PRA-families. It is very useful for the project that the other Nordic countries co-operate - to find the PRA-gene in shetland sheepdogs. The purpose with the PRA-project is to find the DNA-gene for PRA in shetland sheepdogs. When we find this gene we will be able to blood test a sheltie to find out if he is a PRA-carrier or not. This will help the breeding program to avoid to breed PRA affected dogs in the future. The research need blood tests from "good" PRA-families. This means blood tests from PRA-dogs, their parents, grand parents if they live, litter mates and offspring - with diagnoses from both positive and negative for PRA. As many blood tests we can have from one family will decide if it is a "good" family or not. The researchers will have ultimate information from a family with many blood tests compared to very few blood tests in one family. In PRA-cases with family still alive, it is therefore of the greatest importance for everyone to contribute to get blood tests from such family. This will help our breed to a future life without PRA.
